Piano Lessons

When is My Child Ready to Learn to Play Piano?

When is a child ready to start piano lessons? It depends on the child. Mozart was playing by age four. Five or six is a good age if they are motivated to play piano and have the ability to focus. Seven or eight is a really good age to start regardless of whether they have a deep interest or not. I would recommend coming for a free lesson to see if they are ready. I’ll be honest about what I think.

If they are too young to start piano lessons, please sign up for my Music Preparatory Academy group lessons. These are geared towards children ages 3-6 and are designed to prepare them to play piano, flute, or any instrument they might be interested in.

Curriculum

I use the Faber Piano Adventure method books. We learn scales, theory and technique alongside the method books. Students can include songs they are interested in to supplement the curriculum. Once a student graduates from the Faber method books, we pursue piano repertoire of various styles and continue to refine our technique. Students are also presented with the opportunity to learn to accompany, a valuable skill, and will be given real life experiences doing so.

Included in the monthly tuition is a weekly 30-minute private lesson. (It can be longer if desired, but at a higher fee.) Included are 2-3 student recitals and three group lessons held throughout the year. Students can also participate in Federation, held in late winter/early spring. See Tution/Fees for more information on this subject.
